Crane Riposte is a feat in Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Effects[]

You take only a –1 penalty on attack rolls for fighting defensively.

Whenever you lose the dodge bonus from Crane Wing because an attack missed you by 4 or less, the enemy provokes an attack of opportunity.

Strategy[]

This is the final Feat in the Crane Style build and the defensive benefits from taking it and its prerequisites are great:

+2 (Fighting Defensively)
+1 (Dodge)
+1 (Crane Style)
+4 (Crane Wing)
+1 (Mobility, Rank 3)
= +9 dodge AC bonus when fighting defensively

  • Attack bonus penalty

-4 (Fighting Defensively)
+2 (Crane Style)
+1 (Crane Riposte)
= -1 penalty when fighting defensively

However, the ultimate cost of this AC bonus is steep at 5 feat points spent. A few classes can afford it, usually Fighters (due to the high amount of bonus feats they get) and Monks (they get Improved Unarmed Strike for free and can choose Crane Style and Dodge as bonus feats) have an easier time than the rest.

Riposte attack aside, the attack bonus granted by this feat can be achieved by the likes of Weapon Focus and/or Greater Weapon Focus which have the added benefit that they apply a passive bonus (i.e. are always active) - even when Fighting Defensively is deactivated. Thus, Crane Riposte can be skipped if the character has a limited selection of feats.

On the other hand, you are not getting this feat early on anyway (BAB 8 is required), and by the mid-game losing +1 attack bonus is not that important. Free attack (intensified by Outflank feat) is the real selling point of this feat. You are not getting many of those (unless you frighten or trip enemies).
