“ | Jaethal is an elf from Kyonin, one who is not quite… alive. | „ |
Jaethal is a companion in Pathfinder: Kingmaker. She is a neutral evil undead elven Inquisitor of Urgathoa.
Biography[]
Jaethal was originally a judge in Kyonin, but has now been exiled after her part in the ritual murder of several of her family members as offerings to Urgathoa for new pleasures in her dull nearly immortal life. After leaving her homeland Jaethal was attacked and killed by an unknown assailant on the road. Some time after her death, she woke as an undead servant of Urgathoa with a scythe at her side. Since then, however, her dark goddess has been silent, the goddess's will unknown.
Jaethal has a living daughter who remains in Kyonin named Nortellara. Nortellara bears a striking physical similarity to her mother, and Jaethal describes her daughter as the one person who she would hesitate to kill to serve her own interests - not because of any sentimental attachment to the young woman, but because she believes it would be a waste of the work she put into shaping Nortellara. Her relationship with Nortellara is complicated by her daughter's clear contempt for her.
Interactions[]
Jaethal may join your party at the end of the prologue, if you make the evil choice in conversation with Jamandi Aldori. If she doesn't join you in the prologue, you have a chance later to recruit her with a successful Diplomacy check in the Ancient Tomb or by rescuing her from the Kobolds under the Old Sycamore. Since the beginning of chapter 2 she's accessible at the second floor of the capital's tavern. Jaethal can have a very special connection with your main character in the end, even though she can not be romanced.

Role in the party[]
As an inquisitor, Jaethal provides universal utility for your party and is versatile in combat due to being undead. She has high enough Intelligence, 4 base skill ranks per level, and every skill is a class skill for her, so she is a great "skill monkey" (along with bards). Her perception skill will always be the highest in your party, also she is your best bet at intimidating. As an undead, she is immune to a lot of unpleasant effects, including fear and mind-affecting, ability damage and drain, channeling negative energy, and death effects. Healing her at the beginning of the game is a pain though, you have to keep her away from your cleric's channeling and buy a lot of inflict wounds scrolls. She has no Constitution score (Charisma counts as Constitution for all means), and all other stats are higher than point buy will allow. You can train her as a frontline melee combatant (even "tank") or a ranged attacker. Her default weapon (scythe) is not that effective, so you better switch it for something else (elven curve blade or longbow are also acceptable lore-wise). Taking 1 level of fighter allows her to wield an elven curve blade (she's an elf) and wear a heavy armor (plus bonus feat). Taking 1 level of sword saint allows her to wield a fauchard with weapon focus, use Shield spell and keep a distance from the frontline. She doesn't have too many "free" feats, but Solo Tactics (an inquisitor special ability) will allow to make a good trip build of her. Combat-wise, the biggest Jaethal's drawback is you can't use Enlarge Person and Legendary Proportions spells on her (she's an undead), so your best bet is her own Righteous Might spell. As a spontaneous caster, she doesn't need to worry about spell slots every day, and some inquisitor-specific spells are great (Resounding Blow + Bane weapon).
