Nok-Nok and the King's Return is a quest in Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Journal[]

We've found a dirty rag... I mean, old Nok-Nok's hat... I mean, a challenge to a duel (I'm so confused with goblin customs). Looks like the late goblin king has found his way back from the dead and now seeks revenge for his untimely demise. Nok-Nok has no choice but to answer, and our {baron/baroness/king/queen} agreed to watch his back.

The {baron/baroness/king/queen} must travel to Goblin Clearing with Nok-Nok alone and meet with this mysteriously resurrected goblin king.
  • No one has shown up at the Clearing. It seems the {baron/baroness/king/queen} will have to adhere to the ancient rules of goblin challenge and come to the clearing with Nok-Nok alone.

Nok-Nok was unusually silent after defeating the barghest pretending to be the goblin king. It's better to find out what's on his mind — and soon. A goblin lost in thought sounds more dangerous than barghest to me!

Hidden Failure
After defeating the barghest Nok-Nok's head burst with the existential problems like finding his place in the world and reflecting upon his past. A good thing our {baron/baroness/king/queen} was around to help him sort thing out. Nok-Nok returned to his former unbearable self, and everyone sighed with relief.

Walkthrough[]

  • During the starting dialogue of the quest you can:
    • Select (Chaotic Neutral) for +1 to Jester score.
    • "You wanted to be a Big Hero, so this is it. Go, prove yourself." line will result in Nok-Nok dying.
    • Any other choice will lead to starting the quest.

Visit the Goblin Clearing with Nok-Nok alone[]

  • Go to the Goblin Clearing alone with Nok-Nok.
  • As you approach the central part you will meet Goblin Commando (Goblin Clearing) x9, Goblin King (Barghest) and Munguk (if he is alive).
  • There are several branching paths on how you can deal with the situation.
    • First set of dialogue lines does the same thing.
    • Second set does the same thing, but if you pass hidden Perception DC 27 check then you can select "Nok-Nok, this isn't the King. This is something that looks like him." for extra +1440xp
    • Third set does the same thing, but if you pass hidden Lore (Nature) DC 32 check you can select "It's definitely a barghest – demon, looks like a goblin – you know, like this one." for extra +1440xp
      • Starting with third set you can [Attack] "I've heard enough. I'll deal with you myself." to attack all the enemies present and finish the quest faster.
    • On the fourth set you get a splitting choice, failing checks makes you lose that option:
      1. If you kept the shrines during the second quest - Bluff DC 31 check +960xp
      2. Diplomacy DC 29 check +480xp or "Then you'll return from whence you came, because we're not letting you kill anyone."
    • If gone [Bluff] route eventually you get to choose:
      1. [Attack] "Let's strike while it's frenzied!" to attack Goblin King (Barghest) only (others will help) and get +1 to Hero score.
        • You get an extra after-battle dialogue, see below.
      2. "Hold on – maybe it'll drive them all away." for +5760xp, but all enemies will run away.
        1. "It looks like we're done here – and looks like we scattered another potential threat to the kingdom." +1 to Hero score. Quest Objective Completed.
        2. "Be silent, you've led us into enough messes for the day, don't let your tongue lead you into another." +1 to Jester score. Quest Objective Completed.
        3. "If we've dealt with this challenge, we need to deal with other matters." - no score. Quest Objective Completed.
    • If gone [Diplomacy] route, then you get:
      1. Diplomacy DC 32 check +1440xp - passing it gives Jester +2, Hero -1 and puts you on the [Bluff] route, failure eliminates the option.
      2. Passing hidden Knowledge (Arcana) DC 30 check unlocks line "Nok-Nok, listen to me. Cut yourself now, let a drop of blood hit the ground – then fight him only long enough to have him pin you with his foot, kick you, anything – do that, and he vanishes."
        1. "Now go out there and let him kick the hells out of you like a true goblin hero." gives +1 to Hero score
        2. Other lines give no score, but there is a (Lawful Evil) aligned one.
      3. [Let Nok-Nok fight his own battle] "You'll have to fight him, Nok-Nok, you have no other choice."
    • Picking Arcana line or Nok-Nok's battle results in duel between Nok-Nok and Goblin King (Barghest):
      1. "Come on, Nok-Nok. Come on..." or "Get him, Nok-Nok!" gives +1 Hero score.
      2. "Well, at least I'll have one less goblin to worry about this when this is over." gives +1 Jester score.
    • You get an extra +1 to Jester score, and depending on what dialogue option you have chosen:
      1. If chosen [Arcana] option Goblin King (Barghest) disappears and you get an after-battle extra dialogue, see below.
      2. If chosen regular duel option then Nok-Nok will die and quest fail unless you attack everyone with [Attack] "That does it. I'll deal with that creature myself."

Extra dialogue[]

  • Defeating Goblin King (Barghest) alone or making him vanish will give you an extra dialogue:
    1. Diplomacy DC 31 and Intimidate DC 31 check +960xp each, failure allows you to pick other options.
      • Passing any of the checks allows you to get extra Hero/Jester scores:
        1. [Gesture at surrounding crowd] "You did it, Nok-Nok. You wanted to be a Hero – here you are." +1 to Jester score.
        2. "Uh... don't turn anymore, Nok-Nok. Please." +1 to Hero score.
        3. "Nok-Nok, just stand still and enjoy this." +1 to Hero score.
    2. "Hold on – maybe the disappearance of the 'King' will drive them all away." - all NPC will run away.
    3. [Attack] "We can't let them scatter! Strike now while they're surprised!" to kill the remaining NPC (+1008xp + Munguk's +67xp). Quest Objective Completed.
  • If you passed any of the checks or made the goblins scatter you get:

Reward-effective solution[]

  • Pass hidden Perception DC 27 check and select "Nok-Nok, this isn't the King. This is something that looks like him." +1440xp
  • Pass hidden Lore (Nature) DC 32 check and select "It's definitely a barghest – demon, looks like a goblin – you know, like this one." +1440xp
  • Pass Diplomacy DC 29 check +480xp
  • Pass Diplomacy DC 32 check +1440xp
    1. [Attack] "Let's strike while it's frenzied!" for Goblin King (Barghest)'s loot.
      • [Attack] "We can't let them scatter! Strike now while they're surprised!" +1008xp or +1075xp
    2. "Hold on – maybe it'll drive them all away." +5760xp (if you don't care about the Kukris)

Nok-Nok wants yet another word[]

  • Go back to Tuskdale and talk with Nok-Nok.
  • Final dialogue depends on Hero and Jester scores you have gained during his quests.
    1. HERO: NokNok_HERO >= NokNok_JESTER
      • "You've been more than a Hero and you've proved it. You dealt with the, uh, Mighty Munguk, saved your tribe, erected great temples of Lamashtu, and survived a goblin king – twice. And won."
        • "I'll let you sort that one out in your own." or "Do what you need to do – I have other matters to attend to." will also lead to Hero, At Last! errand.
    2. JESTER: NokNok_HERO < NokNok_JESTER
      • "You could do something else? Every challenge you faced wasn't won with a blade, it was won by who you are – and well, making others laugh."
        • "Why not embrace it? If you can disarm problems with a trick and have them laughing along with you, then you're more king than most."
          1. "Well, let's call you by a different title, but no less important – you'll be the court's jester."
          2. "It would, but not if you were granted the title of 'jester', which is what, uh, goblins in the south call a king."
    3. Picking any other line will fail the quest and will lead to bad consequences in the future.
