You gain a +2 bonus on initiative checks as long as you start combat with a dueling sword. As long as you wield only a single dueling sword in one hand (not using a shield, an off-hand weapon, armor spikes, unarmed strikes, or natural weapons), you gain a +2 shield bonus to your AC.

Although the dueling sword deals slashing damage, you treat it as if it were also a piercing weapon when determining the effects of weapons used by a duelist

Since the Magus' Spell combat is not included in the list of loadouts that prevent the +2 to AC from being applied, this has natural synergy with that class if you are looking to increase AC prior to the Arcane Medium and Heavy armor feats a Magus' will get at levels 7 and 13 respectively. This will give you some added defense for those who can't use a shield though the feat cost can be a bit steep. Though it is a bit more worthwhile if you have a higher dexterity modifier than strength so you can keep a strong attack roll with the weapon thanks to the prerequisite weapon finesse.
