War of the River Kings is a quest in Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Journal[ | ]

Irovetti, the ruler of Pitax, has attacked our kingdom! But he doesn't move his troops onto our lands and or besiege our cities — he prefers trickery and deception over force. He must be stopped before our kingdom collapses from within!

Bandits are raiding our provinces along the Pitaxian border. They must be stopped!
Destroy the bandit camp +5760xp Objective_AssCamp2 (11f45216653981a4dac0f3fd1ed1eec2)
They've plundered our lands long enough! An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth!
  • Urtenea the halfling, a renowned poison-maker, is now dead. Now let's clear out the camp, and send the rest of the bandits to Pharasma.

  • Ilora Nuski won't trouble us any more. We need to make sure there are no more threats in the bandits' camp.

Instigators strut around the streets, causing trouble and stirring up unrest. It's obvious that someone from the Pitaxian Academy of the Grand Arts is writing texts and printing leaflets for them. But who could it be, and where should we look for him?
  • It seems Irovetti planned something with the bards from his Academy, in the village called Littletown…

Looks like this is the source of the rumors and the leaflets that were sent around our kingdom! Time to talk with the ones behind it, face to face.
Discover why monsters are attacking the kingdom +4320xp Objective_MonCamp1 (cba62ceda0542484bbfbf4d3b96539c9)
Reports are coming in from all over the kingdom, of bloodthirsty monsters emerging from nowhere in the most unexpected places. These attacks must be stopped! But where are they coming from?
  • An organization of ranger mages contacted our kingdom. They are ready to determine the source of this threat, for a small reward. This project should be started as soon as possible!

Enter the cave and eliminate the mage teleporting monsters +5760xp Objective_MonCamp2 (4616106c9439c9247ad904a35a7b6fa4)
We managed to find out that the monsters were being teleported into our kingdom from a deep cave system in Pitax! It's time we gave this place a visit.
Explore Whiterose Abbey +5760xp Objective_WhiteRose (6edc0ae457e5d7f4cb0f1ce7702922bc)
Nyrissa told us that Irovetti is hiding something extremely important in a place called Whiterose Abbey — something we can use as a weapon against him. It's not clear if we can trust this tricky nymph. But perhaps this is the chance we need to ruin our enemy's plans!
  • In the Whiterose Abbey, we found the bodies of people killed under Irovetti's orders. All the victims were members to the famous Trade Houses of Pitax.

King Irovetti plays an unfair game! Our only option is to grit our teeth and endure the influence of Pitax – and wait for an opportunity to counter-attack!

The more of Irovetti's plots we unravel, the more insolent and desperate he becomes. Realizing that he will never succeed in taking our {King/Queen}'s land without a fight, he's offered {him/her}... a chance to surrender! What an impudent fellow! We're going to pay him a visit in Pitax, and show him who exactly should be surrendering!
Challenge Irovetti +8640xp Objective_Showdown (01267e98859ea7a48a1e525c6199fae1)
Irovetti stands in front of his palace, waiting for {Name} to bring him {his/her} crown. We could face him down right now... But he's got plenty of enemies throughout the city! Let's try to beat Irovetti at his own game, and turn his own people against him. A great battle is coming, and we need allies!

Fight Irovetti in the palace +57600xp Objective_FinalFight (d9f498d3d6a34c446ae5676f4bb4afa9)
The battle is won! Pitax belongs to us! Defeated, ousted — but still breathing — Irovetti is hiding somewhere in the palace. Time to take his crown... And perhaps his head as well!
Keep track of passing time! No exp DoomCounter_WarStart (b7e2a33101446c94aa912aef1059e97d)
Pitax is winning the war, and our poor kingdom won't hold out much longer. We must bring the war to Irovetti's doorstep, and confront the sly king in person!
It's the end of an era — King Irovetti is dead! I won't be writing any obituaries for him, no eulogies or condemnations — I'll leave that to someone who wasn't involved in his dethronement. But one thing is clear: Pitax will never be the same. What will become of it now? That's up to {King/Queen} {Name} to decide!

Walkthrough[ | ]

  • The deadline timer will start ticking once the quest starts, the duration until it happens will depend on your performance at The Rushlight Tournament or lack thereof.
  • 240 days if you did well, 210 days for neutral, and 150 days if you did bad or didn't participate at all.
  • Although Pitaxian Influence events are more likely to destroy your kingdom long before that if you ignore the quest objectives.

Find a way to deal with the bandits / Destroy the bandit camp[ | ]

  • In the River Blades' Camp you need to deal with two foes: Ilora Nuski and Urtenea.
  • Urtenea is in the north camp:
    • If you go straight to the north camp you will fight her gang in direct combat, otherwise they will have time to prepare an ambush and you will start with dialogue instead.
      1. If Nok-Nok is in the party he will expose the ambush right away.
      2. [Attack] "To arms! They're surrounding us!" if passed hidden Perception DC 36 check
      3. (Chaotic Evil) [Attack] "I've no interest in your excuses. Die!"
      4. (Neutral Good) "Fine. Live. I have to go."
    • No matter what you do, the three rogues will surround the character who is closest to Urtenea.
  • Ilora Nuski is in the west camp
    • After getting beaten up she surrenders and you can:
      1. Let her go: (Neutral Good)
      2. Kill her: (Lawful Good), (Chaotic Evil)
  • Completing this objective stops Pitaxian Assassins periodic problems from appearing.

Find the propagandists / Eliminate the instigators[ | ]

  • Enter Littletown, your main goal is in the Tavern, the rest of enemies are just for experience.
  • In the Tavern you automatically enter dialogue, your choices are:
    1. Two Bards will leave, two Bards will join you as neutrals.
      • (Chaotic Good) Pass Diplomacy DC 32 check (+1440xp)
      • [Requires Neutral] "Bards of the academy, whether you're here because you believe me a worthless {king/queen} or for the money and laurels promised by Irovetti, I say you should judge me by my deeds rather than speculative rumors. To the former, I say visit my kingdom, see my people, and then you may decide what kind of ruler you believe I am. To the latter, I say come serve me instead — bear witness that my treasury is abundant and my courtiers are free to speak their minds. Decide for yourselves for whom you work and about what you wish to sing — I guarantee safety to anyone who accepts my offer."
    2. Fight against everyone, even Ivar.
      • (Neutral Evil) [Attack] "You should've thought twice before dragging my name through the mud... None of you leaves here alive."
    3. Four Bards will leave.
      • (Neutral Good) "Trebricent, enough with your pretentious bravado. You know what will happen if you don't surrender peaceably. You have a chance to prevent bloodshed, if you'll just lay down your weapons."
      • (Chaotic Good) Fail [Diplomacy] check
      • "You seem to be having a nice time. I'll just go — I wouldn't want to bother you."
  • Ivar, if alive, will help you out if you parted on good terms in Silverstep Grove, or will leave the combat if you exiled him.
    • If he is friendly, you can talk to him after combat to get his Curse Project. You can let him go again or kill him afterwards.
    • Be careful with aoe spells, as he might die to them.
  • Completing this objective stops Songs of Pitax periodic problems from appearing.

Discover why monsters are attacking the kingdom / Enter the cave and eliminate the mage teleporting monsters[ | ]

Explore Whiterose Abbey[ | ]

  • This objective is unlocked by completing The Path of the Dreams.
  • Go to the Whiterose Abbey
  • At the end of the short dungeon you will see a [Dripping Clock], break it with Strength DC 18 check +360xp, 4 hours will pass if you fail.
  • Evindra will come out and you get to ask her several questions, the way you can deal with her:
    1. Kill her: (Neutral Evil) [Attack] "Time to rid the world of one more treacherous creature!"
    2. Invite her to Tuskdale: "All right. I may have need of further information."
    3. Exile her: "No. I don't want agents of Nyrissa in my capital."
  • After that you will be able to dive into lake, doing so completes the objective and gives you Fox Signet Ring.
  • By diving in you also get options to do two checks, you can postpone those checks for later in case your current skills are not high enough.
    1. Knowledge (World) DC 30 check +720xp and extra +1440xp.
    2. Athletics DC 30 check +720xp and Dark Wind.

Oppose the influence of Pitax[ | ]

Go to Pitax / Challenge Irovetti[ | ]

  • Enter Pitax (City), before going for Pitax Royal Palace you could talk to various NPC in the town in order to lure them on your side. You will start in the main square, you can reach the other areas of the city by exiting using the area exits. The palace is located to the NE of the main square and going near it will trigger dialogue with Irovetti.
    1. Gasperre Liacenza, main square
    2. Irsei Caelysse, main square
      • You have only one try to convince city guard to help you:
        1. Positive: Pass Diplomacy DC 42 check +46080xp or mention Monsters.
          • If you pass the [Diplomacy] check then during Pitax Aftermath if you keep the Pitax guard you will also get alignment shift: (Lawful Good) if got rid of Kharne, (Chaotic Neutral) if let him be.
        2. Negative: Fail [Diplomacy] check, mention Pirates, Littletown or Whiterose Abbey.
    3. Stefano Moskoni, main square
      • Can not be convinced in advance, but unlike other NPC can be attacked and killed on spot.
    4. Drey Yarnes, Academy
      • Gives you an opportunity to choose one wrong option or fail the check.
        1. Positive: Pass Diplomacy DC 36 check +5760xp, mention Irovetti's harassments or shame him in the name of Calistria.
        2. Negative: Failing [Diplomacy] check, Thieves Guild, Pirates, Littletown, Monsters, Whiterose Abbey
    5. Atalia Gitaren, Academy
      • Can be convinced to help only with [Lawful-only] option.
      • Telling her about the bards at Littletown will anger her, but will also end the dialogue and prevent you from trying to convince her further.
      • Tends to die quickly at the palace gates.
    6. Annamede Belavarah, Academy, center steps
      • Appears only if you talk to Atalia Gitaren by choosing [Lawful-only] option or mentioning Littletown.
      • Agrees to help without the need to persuade, but you can refuse.
      • If you accept her deal she will kill Atalia at the gates. Even if she dies during combat she will stand up after the fight.
    7. Kharne Vereel, Port
      • Can be persuaded only if you mentioned the Bloodbrush extract during The Rushlight Tournament.
        1. Positive: Pass Intimidate DC 42 check +46080xp, [Evil-only] option, mention Ilora Nuski.
          • If during Pitax Aftermath event you appoint him as a governor, [Evil-only] gives reinforced effect, what it does is yet unknown.
        2. Negative: Fail [Intimidate] check, (Lawful Evil) option, mention Littletown, Monsters or Whiterose Abbey.
    8. Ilora Nuski, Port
      • Appears if you have let her live or never met her, will help you by definition, but you can kill or dismiss her.
  • Attempting to attack any of those characters will make them vanish and the rest will disappear (except for Ilora Nuski).
  • During the showdown at the Palace gates the groups whom you have managed to convince to support you will fight on your side.
  • Unless you attacked any of the named NPC, during Showdown itself you can convince Stefano Moskoni to help you with [Chaotic-only] option.

Fight Irovetti in the palace[ | ]

  • There are numerous enemies on the level, but in order to unlock the door to Castruccio Irovetti you need to sound one of the two alarms. More below.
  • West side:
    • General's Room: Avinash Jurrg, if not killed, he will join the large group before Irovetti.
    • Mess Hall: upon entering the room you will get a dialogue with an alignment choice +720xp.
      1. (Chaotic Good) to fight less enemies.
      2. (Lawful Neutral), (Chaotic Evil) to kill them all.
    • Art Gallery (up the stairs) :
      • Attacking the golems will trigger the alarm, brining in a patrol group.
        • Attempting to go past the second set of golems will also trigger the alarm.
      • After clicking on three candelabra you will unlock hidden room with Golden Golem (Pitax Royal Palace).
      • Place Cup of the Victor, Vulgar Statuette and Silver-stringed Lute in three chests (from left to right accordingly)
      • Talk to Golem and answer his questions: "Mandalarucio", "Bellander", "Hajoth Hakados" - you will unlock a secret stash with loot and get +1440xp.
  • East side:
    • Arena: if you enter the middle of the arena during combat Gedovius with his smilodons will come out from the basement.
    • Library:
      • You will meet Luar Zottenropple and Vyar Zottenropple here. No matter what option you choose, they will eventually attack you. They can cast spells such as Prismatic Spray and Weird.
        • Warning: if during Jubilost's quest The Door to Nowhere you have chosen to give immortality to a random gnome: do NOT attack the gnomes yourself, otherwise Jubilost will die later. This is the only way to avoid fighting these gnomes. Nyrd Zottenropple will teleport in and the gnomes will go away, you also get +2880xp for letting them go.
      • Nyrd Zottenropple will also be present here if you haven't completed "Enter the cave and eliminate the mage teleporting monsters" objective. Which makes the encounter a little bit odd if you saved random gnome in Jubilost's quest The Door to Nowhere.
        • More to the odd behaviours, you can meet her again in The Menagerie even after killing her here.
      • Opening Conservatory room will trigger the alarm, brining in a patrol group.
  • Basement:
    • Torturer's chambers:
      • Gedovius with his smilodons can be found there, at the east corner a secret passage can be found, which require Athletics DC 40 check and 8 hours to clear, you can't go there if you fail the check.
      • Behind the door you will find the ghost of Reaford Tabulus Vallersteil, a very dangerous enemy.
    • Prison: Hannis Drelev could be found here, you can either kill him, leave him be or send him to a priest with (Chaotic Good) option.
  • All other side rooms contain only more enemies and loot.
  • Main hallway:
    • You will first have to fight a big group of enemies with hidden archers and bards on the high ground.
    • Patrol groups, unless both killed will be here as well.
    • Avinash Jurrg will teleport into the fight if was not killed before.
  • Throne Room:
    • Castruccio Irovetti himself, before the battle he will let you make an alignment choice: (Lawful Good), (Neutral), (Chaotic Neutral) or (Neutral Evil).
    • After he have been beaten enough he will call out for a naga Engelidis.
      1. If you have failed to destroy Oculus of Abaddon before Nyrissa gets it, during the cutscene she will come in and take the real Briar from Irovetti, it would cause Engelidis to kill him. The fight will be easier, but you get no additional rewards.
      2. Otherwise Engelidis will heal Irovetti and you will have to continue the tough fight.
  • On completing the quest you will automatically resolve any current Pitaxian Influence event.

Aftermath[ | ]

Three days after killing Castruccio Irovetti you get Pitaxian Crowd Awaits an Audience event, where you decided the fate of Pitax and those who supported you in overthrowing Irovetti. The list shows everyone, but for obvious reasons if you have someone dead they won't appear.

  • Governor appointment, every decision affects the final Pitax buff, see below:
    1. (Neutral Good) "I appoint Gasperre Liacenza as governor."
    2. (Chaotic Neutral) "I appoint Stefano Moskoni as governor."
    3. (Chaotic Evil) "I appoint Kharne Vereel as governor."
Unlocks Capital of Crime region upgrade for Pitax.
    4. (Neutral) "None of you will be governor. I will send my own viceroy."
  • Governor executions:

Self-administration of the Academy (Loyalty +3, Arcane +2, Culture +4)
Unlocks In the Name of Art region upgrade for Pitax.
    4. "No headmaster will be necessary. I am closing down the Academy."
Cultural Stagnation (Community +2, Economy +4)
  • Academy executions:
    • (Lawful Evil) "Guards! I sentence Atalia Gitaren to be executed. Take her away!"
    • (Lawful Evil) "Guards! I sentence Annamede Belavarah to be executed. Take her away!"
  • Irsei Caelysse about city guard, every decision affects the final Pitax buff, see below:
    1. "I accept your pledge. Serve the city as you have before."
    2. "The city is now under new leadership. I will retire the city guard, and create a new one, personally loyal to me."
      1. (Lawful Evil) "Is that a threat? Guards! Arrest that man! I sentence him to death!"
      2. "I didn't ask for your advice. Have a good day, former captain Caelysse."
      3. "I've changed my mind, and I accept your pledge. Continue to serve the city as you always have."
  • Irsei Caelysse about thieves guild (if Kharne Vereel is NOT a governor)
    1. (Lawful Good) "You can throw them out of the city. I won't lift a finger to protect that scum."
    2. (Neutral) "They have every right to do business unless they disturb the peace."
    3. (Lawful Evil) "They are under my protection. Do not stand in the way of honest people doing fair business."
  • Ilora Nuski (if alive):
    1. (Lawful Good) "I'll hire you, but on one condition. No more robberies. From now on you're a military combat unit within my army."
      Pitaxian Fleet (Military +5)
    2. (Lawful Neutral) "Thank you for your service, but we have different paths to follow. I have no need of pirates in my kingdom."
    3. (Lawful Evil) "You've helped me, and I appreciate that. But you are pirates, and all pirates must hang. Guards, take her away! Make sure she doesn't suffer."
    4. (Neutral Evil) "You can continue in your usual work – just don't forget to share!"
      Pirates' Lot (Economy -3, +3 BP/week)
  • Depending on your choice of governor and guards you get different kingdom buffs about Pitax state, listed in order of priority:
    1. Pitax in Chaos (Community +5, Loyalty +5, Economy +5, Relations +5, Stability -5)
    2. Good Old Pitax (Community +7, Military +4, Economy +7, Relations +4, Espionage +4)
    3. New Rulers of Pitax (Community +4, Loyalty +7, Economy +5, Relations +3, Espionage +7)
    4. Struggling Times for Pitax (Community +4, Loyalty +4, Military +3, Economy +3, Relations +4, Espionage +3)
      • The rest of the options
  • If Stefano Moskoni is alive you also get Moskoni's Ways (Community +3)**
  • You also get a buff or debuff (or nothing) depending on how the events of The River's Justice played out:
    1. If you proved Walsh Celvoway to be guilty
Love for the New Ruler (Loyalty +2, Stability +2)
    2. If you was deemed guilty then you get:
Pitaxian Hatred (Community -3 Loyalty -5 Stability -3)
Pacify Pitax project to remove the debuff

Judging by the provided kingdom stats and effects, the best solution is to appoint Kharne Vereel governor, execute Gasperre Liacenza, appoint Annamede Belavarah as head of the Academy, keep Irsei Caelysse as the head of the guard and let Ilora Nuski to continue her piracy.

Bug icon The condition for the buff is a little bit buggy: you can assign Gasperre Liacenza or your own viceroy as governor and sentence Stefano Moskoni to death and still get a buff, or you can assign Kharne Vereel as governor and sentence Gasperre Liacenza to death, but not get the buff.
